Leather shoes adapt to the feet when worn. To prevent unsightly creases from becoming entrenched, they need support from shoe trees or lasts. Four basic rules ensure that this part of shoe care works optimally:
- Always store shoes you won't wear for a long time with shoe trees.
- Use your own shoe trees for each pair of shoes or boots.
- Put the shoe trees in the shoes immediately after each wear to let the foot moisture escape.
- Use crumpled newspaper as a stopgap measure at best. It doesn't have enough strength to stretch shoes out smoothly.
